2 year old adopted dog?? basic obedience? are there basic classes for adult dogs or should be go to puppy?
classes?? where do you find a trainer? how can you tell apart good trainers from bad ones (in other words what should i ask to see)
To find a good trainer, you need to attend a couple of classes – without you dog. See how they run the class. Do they use a lot of physical force to get the dogs to do what they want? Are they heavy on treat-use to bribe the dogs into doing what they want? Do you like the way the dogs in the class are behaving?
A good class focuses less on using treats and more on getting your dog to respect you and build a bond, in addition to getting your dog socialized. May good trainers will also do one-on-one consultations at your home so you don’t have the distraction of other students and are training in a familiar environment. Your vet may be able to recommend someone, but also speak to other dog owners with dogs you find well-behaved. Find out where they went. Big box stores like Petsmart are okay for basic obedience, but I would avoid them if you can.
