Why do dogs have to chew on everything plastic?
Why is my dog chewing plasitc as bad as she is? I keep dog toys all around the house and buy rawhide for her all the time. She is almost a year old now. I am afraid she is gonna hurt her insides is she swallows a large piece or chokes on some. She digs through the kids toys to find anything that is plastic. I have used spray to stop her from cheweing but the stuff wears off fast. Any ideas what to do and why she is doing it?
Some dogs have a condition called “Pica” in which they try to eat inedible objects. Sometimes the condition is caused by a mineral deficiency; sometimes it’s related to boredom; and sometimes it’s related to some emotional problem.
We suggest that you have your dog checked by her vet with “Pica” in mind.
In the meanwhile, you’re going to have to be extra dilligent about making sure that she DOESN’T get into anything plastic. Plastic can shred her insides up, and can cause immovable blockages in her intestinal tract… which will lead to the need for surgery, some very hefty vet bills and possibly her death.
