Why are the products with green stickers more expensive?
…And if you are on a budget and just buy the cheapest product even though its not green, does that make you bad? Will the poor be demonized by this?
A lot of these answers seem biased so far.
There are a few reasons that some eco-friendly products cost more. Many times they are made by small companies who don’t have the money to mass produce so the costs are higher. Large companies count on people who want to do the right thing to be willing to spend more, so they put a green spin on the same or similar product and charge more.
The greenest thing to do is to by less. Reduce is the 1st of the 3 R’s for a reason. Our consumerism has the largest impact on the environment, so reducing it has a greater impact than swithcing products. The other thing anyone who wants to reduce their impact needs to do is educate themselves. There is a lot of green washing and although the word organic is regulated when it comes to food, many other words like natural are not.
Conservation is free, it costs nothing to conserve resources or energy and it usually saves money. Just because a person can’t afford to replace items with the latest trend doesn’t mean they aren’t doing their part. The person who can cut their utility bill by 10% is doing more for the environment than the person who goes out and buys a dozen bamboo t-shirts or the person who guts their kitchen to put in the latest trendy cabinets and counter tops.
We should all learn to live our lives with less material items and try to buy those that are best for the environment when we do need to buy.
