Undercoat Rake

Undercoat Rake
For the dog groomers out there?

Have you ever used a stripping/lava stone? I’m thinking of using one on my Lab. I had been thinking of getting a furminator, but they are so expensive. Now, I realize that stripping stones don’t last forever but I could go through like 25 of them for the price of 1 Furminator.

Would an undercoat rake and finishing off with a stripping stone essentially give me the same result as using the Furminator (aside from the price I also worry about cutting up the topcoat)?
I was talking to someone who said they saw a dog with their coat pretty badly cut up by a Furminator, but it could very well be from improper use..
Thanks for the answers. Don’t worry, I already know not to card the legs/face.

I was under the impression that lava stones could be used on shorthaired doublecoated breeds.. (I’m not talking about handstripping the guard hairs or anything).

Well, regardless I found a really good deal on a Furminator on Ebay, so I’ll let you all know how it goes once it arrives!

Yes you can use a stripping stone on a Lab, it will take out undercoat. You should brush first first, then comb with a fine comb (I find an undercoat rake isn’t that great on a lab)and finish with a Furminator or stripping stone. Grooming this way takes the coarsest hair out first then works down to the finest. If you start with a Furm. first you may be working through a lot of hair that can be easily brushed out first. Don’t use the stone around the face, ears and eyes (it breaks apart and the sharp pieces can hurt eyes), and don’t use the stone on legs, feet, bellies etc…its to sharp and can cut. With both the Furm. and the stone use short strokes a few times in the same area then move to the next section. Do the whole dog then repeat the same process. If you over work an area you can make a bald spot. Yes the rake and the stone can give the same results but may take longer to get the same results. I have found the Furm doesn’t cut the coat. A Furm. is worth the price because of the time it saves you when grooming.
