Can I bring my 8lb dog from the USA with me to the Dominican Republic for a 1 week vacation?
If so, are there any pet friendly hotels in La Romana?
Hey…My dog is about 7 lbs and he has traveled twice with me to the Dominican Republic. Here are a few things you will need:
1) Health Certificate
-go to your vet to get a health certificate and all the shots that the dog needs. I know that some airlines want some shots to be given a least 7 or 10 days before travel. I, for example, needed the health certificate & shots 10 days prior. Im not really sure, but just call the airline to check.’
2) Sherpa Bag
-since your dog is 8lbs, I am guessing he isnt that big, so you can definately take him in the cabin. But you WILL NEED a sherpa bag or anything similar to it. It kinda like a suitcase but for dogs.
3) Once in DR
-I traveled to Santo Domingo (Las Americas) and when he got there, you go to the Agriculture guy (i forgot exact title) and he reviews ur dog’s health certificate, and writes up a new one saying that he inspected the dog and that its okay for the dog to come inside the country. You also have to pay 300 pesos (at least back in July 2006) in tax, which is less than 10 dollars. Make sure u get back from him ur original health certificate. He will explain to you that the Dominican health certificate is the only thing u need for the dog to leave the Dominican Republic, so make sure to bring it with u when you leave DR.
4) A few pointers:
-Make sure to ask at the vet for a sedative for u dog. They can get very impatient on the plane and start barking which is annoying.
-Take baby wipes just in case the dog poops or something. But i advise not to give him food that morning or the day u r flying.
-Bring toys to keep him busy.
