RE: Grooming Yorkies, Maltese? Do pros give the dog a sedative, or something (what?)?
I want to do ‘in-between’ grooming on my little Maltese – but I’m afraid I’ll injure her or botch the job? Pro groomers MUST do something to help – WHAT DO THEY USE/DO to be able to get the precision??

there are some groomers out there that do use sedatives, reputable ones do not. there is no reason a dog needs sedation to be groomed. a grooming table with an arm and neck restraint basically gives you that “third arm” to hold them on the table. so you still have your 2 handles to maneuver and groom them. you cant stop when they trow tantrums or whine, they will realize that you stop and will continue to do it. dogs will take advantage of new groomers just like their owners and make everything more difficult. they know if who is working on them will know how to handle them and behave. this comes only from experience, and there are some dogs that are just less fidgety than others. it took me grooming about 30 dogs to get comfortable with trimming in between the eyes, which lots of owners want to do at home. so to do it 30 times on your own dog will take awhile. don’t trim above the eyes to short as it is hard to make look nice once you take it to the pro. even we cant make a nearly bald spot above the eyes look real good lol. you can get yourself a grooming arm as they just clamp on the the edge of a table. hold the dogs hair on their chins to get their face done. not to hard but your dog may need practice to hold still. get yourself some good scissors and brushes as cheap ones just don’t get the job done
